Vintage Fender guitar

A friend of mine just dropped over $5000 for a beaten up 1970s Fender Strat. I don’t really understand vintage guitars, and why people are so obsessed with them – you can go and buy a new Strat for a fraction of the price of a vintage one, and I for one can’t hear the difference.
