I’ve been a big fan of Siouxsie since the late eighties, and one of my all time favorite albums has always been Nocturne. So when I found out that there was a DVD release of the concert, I bought it immediately. The concert is awesome, Siouxsie absolutely rocks - but it’s worth buying just to see Robert Smith in leather pants. 1983 at it’s best.
Remember the Seinfeld episode where Jerry finally admitted to secretly watching Melrose Place? Well, watching Beverly Hills 90210 was one of my dirty little secrets back in the 90s. The first season’s main characters, Dylan, Kelly, Donna, Steve, David, Andrea and twins Brandon and Brenda all attended West Beverly Hills High School. Brandon and Brenda Walsh and their parents were the stable nuclear family with strong values; their home was a safe haven for the whole gang and the center of much of the drama. The show dealt with a steady stream of love triangles and other romantic entanglements and occasionally touched on more serious issues as well. Wonderfully cringeworthy!
Although I purchased the original US release of Luc Besson’s Leon - The Professional years ago, for some reason I’d never bother getting the deluxe “International Edition” directors cut DVD before - but now I have. And it’s a totally different film - all I can say it that it’s obvious why it was cut for American audiences. If you’re a fan of Luc Besson, Jean Reno, Gary Oldman or Natalie Portman - then this is a must see.
Astonishingly violent - Shogun Assassin tells the story of Lone Wolf, a powerful and feared “Masterless” samurai who lives a peaceful existence with his wife and his son. When he refuses to swear allegiance to Kurando, the most vicious Shogun in Japanese history, Kurando orders the death of Lone Wolf’s wife, Azame. Blinded by rage, Lone Wolf vows to avenge her death, taking his son Tizuro with him on the path to darkness and retribution. Soon Lone Wolf’s sword of vengeance is unleashed upon the evil Shogun’s sons, the legendary “Masters of Death” and finally the Shogun himself… The Lone Wolf And Cub series is one of the most violent and graphic of all samurai films, but also one of the most touching and beautiful. 9/10.
I’ve never really been into red wine. And I find it difficult to sit in front of my TV for the entire duration of a live concert DVD. But David Gilmour’s Live In Concert DVD has changed all that. This is one of the most beautifully recorded concerts I’ve ever seen. Open a nice bottle of red (or two), take the phone off the hook, and spend a few hours in audio/visual bliss.
Having only ever seen The Naked Chef television series, I always thought that Jamie Oliver was a bit of a jerk. But in the last few months I’ve been watching Jamie At Home on TV, and I’m almost embarrassed to say it - but I’m actually impressed! I’ve even made a few of the simple home style dishes from the show. Jamie At Home is a huge step away from The Naked Chef, it’s down to earth, genuinelly funny, and most importantly, shows you how to cook real world food using ingredients that you’ve probably already got in your kitchen.
After several years of watching DivX movies using the TV-Out from my PC, I finally took the plunge and purchased a no-name DivX hardware player. I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner. It’s so much easier than loading up the moving on my PC, hitting the TV-Out button then running into my lounge room with my cordless mouse to watch a movie. Now I can just take my DivX disc into the lounge room, and watch it like a normal DVD. I feel like a civilized human again!
I love all the Bourne films (and books) - and this new DVD has 45 minutes of footage I’ve never seen. The action never stops in this thrilling 3-disc collection that includes The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and a special bonus disc with over 45 minutes of new, never-before-seen material.
I absolutely adore the Studio Ghibli films, and recently decided to get one of the box sets I’d seen for sale. Yes… we all know that some of these Ghibli box sets aren’t exactly 100% licensed by Studio Ghibli or Disney, but I thought I’d risk it anyway. The seller assured me that the DVDs were 100% legit, which I found amusing since I knew that some of the films included in the box set aren’t even ‘officially’ available on DVD. But I went ahead and bought them anyway - and I’m pleased to report that I’m not only extremely happy with the quality of the DVDs, but I’m also very impressed with the entire box set packaging.
The 2007 live action Transformers feature isn’t the first time The Transformers invaded theaters - back in 1986, a full length animated adventure took the world by storm, and it’s now available on DVD. Transformers The Movie 20th Anniversary DVD has been brilliantly remastered and color corrected, and is presented in 16×9 widescreen just like it was at the movies in the 1980s. If you are a Transformers fan, this is a must buy!
